ISO 14001 - Training and Consultancy

After the success of the ISO9000 series of quality standards, the International Standards Organization published a comprehensive set of standards for environmental management.ISO 14001 is an international standard for
effective Environmental Management System (EMS). The helps to maintain balance between maintaining profitability and reducing environmental impact; with the commitment of your entire organization, it can enable you to achieve both objectives. This series of standards is designed to cover the whole area of environmental issues for organizations in the global marketplace.

The ISO 14000 series emerged primarily as a result of the Uruguay round of the GATT negotiations and the Rio Summit on the Environment held in 1992. While GATT concentrates on the need to reduce non-tariff barriers to trade, the Rio Summit generated a commitment to protection of the environment across the world. The environmental field has seen a steady growth of national and regional standards. The British Standards Institution has BS 7750, the Canadian Standards Association has environmental management, auditing, eco-labeling and other standards, the European Union has all of these plus the eco-management and audit regulations, and many other countries (e.g. USA, Germany and Japan) have introduced eco-labeling programs. After the rapid acceptance of ISO 9000, and the increase of environmental standards around the world, ISO assessed the need for international environmental management standards. They formed the Strategic Advisory Group on the Environment (SAGE) in 1991, to consider whether such standards could serve to:

  • Promote a common approach to environmental management similar to quality
  • Enhance organizations' ability to attain and measure
    improvements in environmental performance;
  • Facilitate trade and remove trade barriers.
In 1992, SAGE's recommendations created a new committee, TC 207, for international environmental management standards. The committee and its sub-committees include representatives from industry, standards organizations, government and environmental organizations from many countries. The ISO 14000 series of standards was outcome of these efforts.

    Goal of ISO140001

The goal of ISO 14001 is continual improvement of environmental
management using a system consisting of Environmental Policy, Planning,
Implementation, Checking and Corrective Action, Management Review.

Environmental impact is becoming an increasingly important issue all over the world, with pressure to minimize that impact coming from a number of sources: local and national governments, regulators, trade associations,
customers, employees and shareholders. Social pressures are also building up from the growing array of interested parties, such as consumer, environmental and minority non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academia and neighbours.
So ISO 14001 is relevant to every organization.

    Benefits of ISO 14001 Implementation

The implementation of ISO14001 Environmental management system benefits the organizations in many ways. Some of them are—
    • Assurance that organization continues to meet environmental commitments & corporate policy requirements.
    • Demonstrating business partners, regulatory agencies, and community that you are environmentally responsible
    • Increasing competitiveness
    • Increasing profits through potential process improvements and energy conservation.
    • Reducing your environmental liability.
    • Reducing costs as a result of potentially lower insurance rates.
    • Verifying your systems for recognizing and complying with environmental laws and regulations.
    • Improving relationships with regulators - organizations that implement an ISO 14001 EMS often report improved relations with government regulatory agencies, find that regulators are quicker to provide technical
support, and find that the regulators are much more supportive in general.
    • Capturing institutional knowledge - ISO 14001 ensures this information is properly documented, communicated and retained. The cyclical nature of this management system further ensures all system information is reviewed and updated at least annually.
    • Streamlining operations - organizations often realize monetary savings as a result of greater operational efficiency and energy conservation, and reduction in use of hazardous materials and generation of hazardous wastes.
    • Increased awareness and participation - organizations benefit from better communication about environmental issues inside and outside the organization. ISO 14001 gives people an avenue to raise environmental issues
and makes it clear that environmental performance is an important part of the corporate culture.
    • Safety benefits – by reviewing the procedures for controlling significant operations, including a review of emergency preparedness and response procedures, organizations are able to identify and implement significant safety improvements
